Many apprentices start their careers by working in a joinery shop after school hours, mainly helping out with the cleaning, sorting of timber, etc. If the working relationship is good, the joiner may offer an apprenticeship. It is a good idea to visit local joinery shops in your area. Take along your school reports, even something you have made, to show to the joinery manager. It is important that you talk to the manager about starting an apprenticeship and that you are keen to undertake joinery skills training. As you can see from the chart on the right, your ability to learn and your motivation are two of the attributes you should try to demonstrate during an interview. Once you have an apprenticeship, you will be trained in your workplace, and attend block courses at a Polytechnic near you. Each course is three weeks long, and you will be assessed for up to ten unit standards while you are there. The NZ Government Careers Service site provides more information on apprenticeships.
