What do Joiners do? Being a joiner means “a stick of timber can be selected from a rack and at the end, a staircase is constructed”. Joiners say their job is challenging and exciting. Precise and accurate skills are used to overcome difficulties and to solve any problems manufacturing timber stairs, windows doors kitchen cabinets and much more. For information about Industry Training visit www.itf.org.nz. Click on the Industry Training Organisations at the top. On the left side there are Employers and Learners Tabs. Both Joinery employers apprentices are represented on the video footage. Selecting Suitable Gateway Students for the Joinery or Glass Industry. What type of student is suitable for the glass or joinery industry? One who is precise and fastidious and enjoys working with timber. These students will enjoy working in a team, in an indoor environment. They will get a “buzz” out of making a contribution to a project. Measuring skills are important. A winding staircase short of 5 centimeters could be a frustrating and expensive mistake. Power tools and large and specialized machinery will not faze these people. These students may already have developed the ability to read drawings and plans. What Will The Joinery Industry Offer Students?
For the company there is the chance to teach industry specific skills to the student. This is an important window of opportunity for the employer to gauge the attitude, potential and enhancements young people could make to their company. Students will benefit from applying general skills in a workplace context, while gaining industry skills and in many cases, getting a head start towards the joinery qualification. |
