What is Gateway?
What is Gateway?

Gateway is a structured workplace learning programmes offered to senior secondary school students. Gateway students complete a work placement and what they learn while working is assessed against unit standards on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and integrated with their current programme of study.

Gateway is designed to strengthen the pathway for students from school to workplace learning. Workplace learning is a formalized learning arrangement set in an actual workplace with clear understandings about the knowledge and skills to be attained and the assessment of unit standards. It differs from work experience which tends to be designed to give students a taste of different occupations, to help them in career planning.

Gateway provides employers with an opportunity to work with their local school and contribute to local needs. In the longer term, it will provide for more efficient and effective recruitment which will contribute to increased productivity and an enhanced company skill base.

Gateway provides students with interesting and challenging opportunities leading to future employment or apprenticeships. Students will benefit by applying general skills in a workplace context, while gaining industry skills and in many cases, getting a head start towards the joinery qualification.
