What type of student is suitable for the glass or joinery industry?
One who is precise and fastidious and enjoys working with their hands. These students will enjoy working in a team, in an indoor environment. They will get a “buzz” out of making a contribution to a project. Measuring skills are important as well as being comfortable around power tools and large and specialised machinery. Students may have already developed the ability to read drawings and plans.

What does the joinery or glass industry offer students?
Students will learn practical industry skill and gain industry knowledge. They will gain unit standards that will enhance their career choices including counting towards an apprenticeship if that is what they want. Credits may also contribute towards NCEA.

Students will have the opportunity to be fully immersed in industry to absorb the culture of the workplace and learn interesting and challenging skills. Benefits include being able to apply general skills in a workplace context, while gaining industry skills and in many cases, getting a head start towards a qualification.

Distance Learning Programme
When a work place has been arranged please enrol with JITO for the distance learning programme. Each set of three distance learning unit standard workbooks costs $220 (incl GST). The workbooks will be posted to the student’s school. After each unit standard is completed the student discusses the work with the workplace mentor. The workplace mentor verifies the practical skills in the workbook then the student gives it to the Gateway coordinator for checking. The Gateway coordinator then sends it to JITO for assessment.

Following assessment the workbook is returned to the student and the results reported to JITO and NZQA. Schools will also be notified of the unit standard achievements.
