Joinery qualifications
What Qualifications should my Apprentice do to Benefit my Business?

Joinery apprenticeship qualifications are divided into the types of work that is undertaken by your company. The list below is made up of types of joinery we have qualifications available for:
  • exterior joinery
  • stairs
  • cabinetry
  • manufacturing using CNC (we call this qualification Kitchen manufacturing but it can be anything manufactured on a CNC machine)
  • laminate fabrication
  • component machining.

These qualification divisions are called strands. Your apprentice may do more than one strand at a time as many unit standards are common.

  1. Decide which types of work are manufactured at your company.

Joinery qualifications

National Certificate in Joinery (Introduction)
This qualification is for people intending to enter the joinery industry and is pre-requisite for all our joinery qualifications. As all the skills and knowledge covered in this qualification are required by people entering the industry, all of the unit standards are compulsory.

National Certificate in Joinery (Craftsperson)
Holders of the certificate have demonstrated competence in all aspects of the joinery trade, and are able to work in general joinery, or in any specialist area in joinery.
This is a four year (8,000 hours) course and includes four, three week and one, two week block course. It includes the pre-requisite National Certificate in Joinery (Introduction).

National Certificate in Joinery (strands in Cabinetry, Exterior Joinery or Stairs)
Holders of one of these certificates have demonstrated competence in the skills and knowledge required to work in one of the specialist joinery areas. They are able to carry out many of the tasks required in general joinery, and are able to work competently on any task within their specialty. These qualifications include the pre-requisite National Certificate in Joinery (Introduction).
Cabinetry is a Level 3, two and a half year (5,000 hours) course and includes two, three week block courses and one, two week block course.
Exterior Joinery is a Level 4, three year (6,000 hours) course and includes four, three week block courses.
Stairs is a Level 4, two and a half year (5,000 hours) course and includes three, three week block courses.

National Certificate in Joinery (Component Machining)
This qualification recognizes people who have demonstrated competence in the skills and knowledge required to work in the specialist area of joiner component machining. There are no "production" unit standards in this qualification.
This is a Level 4, two and a half year (5,000 hours) course and includes three, three week block courses or one, one or two week block course.

National Certificate in Joinery (Laminate Fabrication)
This is a Level 3, three year (6,000 hours) course and includes one, three week block course and one, one week block course as well as workplace assessment.

National Certificate in Joinery (Kitchen Manufacturing and Installation)
This qualification covers the knowledge and skills relating to manufacturing bench tops, nested-based manufacturing, kitchen manufacturing materials and hardware, making templates, operating a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine, and manufacturing glulam components.
This is a Level 3, two and a half year (5,000 hours) course and includes two, three week and one, two week block course
