Kitchen Design qualifications
Kitchen and Bathroom Design

JITO in conjunction with the National Kitchen & Bathroom Association NZ (NKBA) offer the following kitchen and bathroom design courses:

National Certificate in Design (Kitchen and Bathroom) Introductory*

This course is specially designed for anyone starting out in the kitchen/bathroom design industry.

Students learn all about kitchen/bathroom cabinets (materials, structure and installation), basic building construction and details about kitchen appliances and kitchen/bathroom fittings. Communication and customer service skills are refined and students learn how to take and interpret a brief. Basic space planning is applied to practical examples and students quickly learn to solve kitchen/bathroom design challenges and draw concept plans. Health and safety in the workplace is covered by distance learning.

After completing a three day workshop,, students have one year to complete four assignments to the required standard before receiving their Certificate. During this year, students receive on-going mentoring from an experienced tutor.

There are no prerequisites for this course, although it is beneficial for students to be employed in the industry

National Certificate in Design (Kitchen and Bathroom) Intermediate*

This course is ideal for anyone wishing to develop or extend their kitchen/bathroom design skills.

It explores the impact building construction, mechanical systems and cabinet manufacture have on kitchen/bathroom design and installation. Students brush up on customer service skills and refine their skills on interpreting and taking a brief, and also gather information on materials and appliances. Specific space planning and ergonomic guidelines are applied to various examples so students can practise creating and presenting the best solutions to a client.

There is a four day workshop followed by four assignments evenly spread over two years. During this time students receive on-going mentoring and support from an experienced tutor.

The only prerequisite is that students are employed in the industry and have at least six months experience.

National Diploma in Design (Kitchen and Bathroom) Advanced*

Students who have achieved the Intermediate Kitchen Design Certificate can enrol in this advanced qualification. Trainees attend a five day workshop which covers colour, the elements and principles of design as well as styles and themes and how these can be developed. Construction requirements, surface materials, lighting and technology are explored with specific reference to a kitchen/bathroom designed for a client with special needs. Design requirements of a commercial kitchen/bathroom, one in a multi-level dwelling and a laundry are also considered. Students learn and practise drawing detailed plans to ensure clear communication to the production team.

The second part of this qualification focuses on project management and business skills, including marketing and how these can be used effectively in a kitchen/bathroom design business. Management and business skills are taught by distance learning modules run through which JITO supplies to you.
